Constipation means different things to different people. For many people, it simply means infrequent stools. For others however, constipation means hard stools which are difficult to pass, or a sense of incomplete emptying after a bowel movement.
Remedies for constipation in adults;
• Drink a glass of warm water with 1 tsp honey and juice of 1/2 lemon in the morning, empty stomach.
• Drink 1 liter water in the morning before you eat or drink anything.
• Drink a solution of 1/2 tsp honey in 1/2 cup warm water 2-3 times a day.
• Put some curry leaves (curry patta) in hot water for a few minutes and ten take out. Mix them with honey and eat.
• Guava when eaten with seeds provides roughage to diet and can give relief from constipation.
• To avoid constipation, take aloe vera juice twice a day. The juice of aloe vera can be extracted by cutting the leaf, collecting the juice and then evaporating it.
• Eating more fruits such as prune pears, grapes, oranges and papaya also help prevent constipation.
• Take a high fiber diet. Soluble fiber, found in grains, legumes and fruits are particularly effective in soothing constipation. Oatmeal, rice, wheat gram, corn bran, prunes, raisins, apricots, figs are all good sources.
• For people with severe constipation, avoid milk and milk products. Both milk and milk products such as cheese, contain casein, an insoluble protein that tends to block up the intestinal tract.
• Take 10 to 12 pieces of raisin (munnakka), was and remove the seeds and boil them with a glass of milk. Once the milk is boiled, eat the raisins.
• Prepare a mixture by adding 2 tsp husk seed (isabgol) in 1/2 cup of hot milk and drink immediately. Repeat this every night for chronic constipation.
• Eat fresh cherries throughout the day or drink three 8 oz glasses of cherry juice during the day.
• A teaspoon of linseed swallowed with water before each meal provides great relief from constipation.
Remedies for constipation in infants and babies;
• Give 2 tsp once a day of homemade ghee (clarified butter) with 1/8 tsp of sugar and juice of black currents soaked overnight in water.
• Soak 6-8 raisins in hot water. When cool, crush well and strain.
• Mix a few drops of castor oil with a tsp of mother’s milk or lukewarm water. Give it once a day to the child; adjust the dose according to the age of the child.
