Toothache also known as odontalgia or odontalgy is pain in the area of your face and jaw. The primary cause behind toothache is tooth decay. Bacteria that live in your mouth thrive on the sugars and starches in the food you eat. The number of times one eats sugar is one of the most important factors in determining the rate of decay.
A cavity is created when the acids produced by the bacteria in plaque eat through the hard, white coating on the outside of your teeth (enamel). You will feel pain while eating sweet, very cold or hot foods. A toothache often indicates that your dentist will need to work on your teeth.
One can prevent the majority of dental problems through flossing, brushing with fluoride toothpaste, and visiting dentist twice a year for dental check-ups.
Until you can see your dentist, try these home remedies for a toothache:
* Use dental floss to remove food particles stick between your teeth.
* Lime is considered valuable in maintaining the health of teeth.
* Take out juice of wheat grass and drink it in case of tooth decay. It acts as a fabulous mouthwash.
* Pain killer can be taken to dull the pain.
* Avoid eating very cold or hot foods because this may make the pain worse.
* Asafoetida should be pestled in lemon juice and heated slightly. Soak a cotton swab in this lotion and place it in the cavity of tooth.
* Apply directly oil of cloves (eugenolon) on the affected tooth. You can even keep a clove in your mouth and suck it. Oil of cloves is available at most drug stores.
* Make a paste of the bark of bay berry with vinegar and apply on affected tooth.
Take an early appointment with your dentist if you have swelling, pain when you bite, a foul-tasting discharge or redness as these indicates infection.
Call your dentist immediately if the pain doesn't go away after a day or two, pain accompanied with high fever or chills, have trouble swallowing or excessive pain or bleeding from gums.
