How Safe Is It To Have Sex After A Heart Attack??

Is sex after a heart attack risky? Are unfounded fears and anxiety bad for the heart? Well, after a heart attack the physical activities may be restricted for a few days but with medicines and healthy changes in lifestyle many people return to normal sex lives. There is little danger in having sex after a heart attack, according to Medical School researchers.

A heart attack is a distressing episode in anyone's life bringing along a shock and fright to the patient and his family.

At such a time when life suddenly turns upside down, you may become upset about your future sex life assuming that sex can cause another heart attack leading to subsequent death. Such a thought would certainly shatter anyone.

In such a distressful state it’s hard to be calm and relaxed. Isn’t it?

Being realistic and cultivating the right attitude towards life can make things a lot easier for you. This would help you understand the needs of your body and also give a clear picture of pre-requisites to satisfy the needs.

It is of a great importance to clear all the baseless doubts regarding your sex life by discussing it openly with a doctor. This will keep you well informed. You must seek guidance from a health professional on a number of issues like a heart attack- from a health professional who can advise on lifestyle, medications, exercise and sex.

Exercising regularly is another activity which you must take up, this will keep you healthy and full of vigor. Sexual activity is another type of exercise and in fact regular sexual activity protects against heart attack or death.

Practically sex puts the same amount of pressure on the heart as a brisk 20 minute walk, and the orgasm adds up to a walk up the stairs. Going by the statistics there is only 1 per cent chance that heart attack may be triggered by sex.

Besides most doctors believe that so long as no severe symptoms such as breathlessness or chest pains are experienced on exertion (climbing stairs, a brisk walk, gardening) resuming sexual activity is safe enough.

“Sex isn’t nearly as risky as many patients believe. With a touch of reassurance, heart patients can once again enjoy sex after a heart attack.” Wayne Sotile, PhD, a psychologist says.

Only if you experience chest pains (angina) or breathlessness it becomes mandatory to consult a doctor, if the symptoms are severe he may suggest medication such as sublingual glyceryl trinitrate or buccal.

Cardiologist Dr Graham Jackson said “75 per cent of deaths that do occur during sexual intercourse are in people having extra marital affairs and in men who are much older than their sexual partners!

With regular medical follow ups and assistance you can safely and soundly return to enjoying a full sex life, just keep away from extra marital affairs and too young partners!

Weaning is the gradual replacement of breastfeeding with other foods and ways of nurturing. If done gradually, weaning can be a positive experience for both the mother and the little one.

ABC of Weaning

Weaning is the process of gradually introducing the infant to solid diet and reducing the supply of mother’s milk. A fully weaned infant derives all its nutrition from solid foods and is off breast milk completely.
