How to teach your child the value of money?

All parents want the best for their children. They attempt to fulfill every need, real or otherwise, of their offspring. This attitude causes obsessive spending or guilt and frustration when unable to do so. This also means children grow up without realizing the struggle their parents undergo. The rich spoilt brat would just not care while the poor child reaches out for violence and drugs.

There are surprisingly simple methods to make your child understand the important role money plays in our lives. You do not need to be a constant whiner about your financial difficulties. That would leave your child depressed and in constant fear.

Show them how you plan your finances. This means, you sit down to write your inflows and tick off your bills, loans and other outgoings. Write out your budget and edge out or postpone items that are not very urgent. This also teaches them prioritizing skills.

Teach them how to foresee expenses on a time horizon. Instill the habit of saving a little over time, so your debt remains low. Where you do need to borrow, show them the factors you consider before making the decision. This approach introduces them to the virtues of saving and the evils of falling into debt recklessly.

Always take them along with you when you go shopping. Children learn very quickly you need to part with money to get things in return.

Discipline yourself and avoid impulsive buying. Children can understand how much self-control leads to worry-free living.

Discuss financial issues in a friendly, objective manner at home. Spouses should never blame each other for the difficulties. Instead, devise methods to save money and communicate them clearly to the children – in words as well as in deeds.

Saving money does not stop with monetary planning. Small acts lead up to the whole picture. Show them responsible attitudes as simple as not wasting food, switching off lights when leaving a room, being thrifty with water, forming car pools and sensible driving habits and your child will surely see the point. Remember, becoming rich does not mean you earn unlimited amounts, but you save up enough and the earnings will take care of themselves.
