Menopause is that phase of a women's life that affects not only her social life but also how she thinks about her own self. Menopause was earlier looked down upon but now women consider it only as a step in the process of aging. Menopause is the term used in medical language for the end of menstrual cycle. It happens between 45 to 60 years of age when the ovaries stop producing the hormone, estrogen. This can also happen if the ovaries stop functioning for any other reason or have been removed surgically.
Low estrogen levels are linked to some uncomfortable symptoms in many women. Some women experience hot flashes, which disrupt their sleep and lead to mood changes. Other symptoms may include irregular periods, vaginal or urinary tract infections, urinary incontinence (leakage of urine or inability to control urine flow), and inflammation of the vagina. Due to these changes in the urinary tract and vagina, some women may have discomfort or pain during sexual intercourse. Many women also notice changes in their skin, digestive tract, and hair during this phase.
Depression may also be more likely in the years right before menopause. This may be because of low level of estrogen but the materialistic cycle of life can also be considered as a cause.
Estrogen, the female hormone is solely responsible for shaping the female body and preparing for pregnancy. Progesterone, is the second most important female hormone and unlike estrogen adrenal glands also contribute to its production besides ovaries. Progesterone helps maintain pregnancy and make breast milk. Decline in the levels of these hormones during and after menopause leads to osteoporosis ( thinning of the bones) and increased risk for heart diseases.
Currently, hormone therapy is recommended for postmenopausal women who have moderate to severe hot flashes or night sweats. Instead of hormone pills, topical hormones like vaginal creams are recommended for women who have problems with vaginal dryness. During perimenopause, some doctors suggest birth control pills to help with very heavy, frequent, or unpredictable menstrual periods. These pills might also help with symptoms like hot flashes, as well as prevent pregnancy. But the best way to fight is to accept this stage and move ahead in life with a positive attitude.
