More research needed to tame Alzheimer’s disease
About Alzheimer's Research Trust
The Alzheimer's Research Trust in the U.K. is a leading research charity for dementia. The organization is dedicated to funding scientific studies to find ways to treat, cure or prevent Alzheimer's disease and related dementia.
The trust urged the government to mull over the wide-reaching initiatives and assist in the battle against the dreaded diseases. It asserted that the government is missing out on a lot of long-term strategies, particularly research.
Advanced studies about prevention of dementia, funded by the government, could save millions of sufferers. It has also been suggested that in order to arrest the problems associated with dementia care in the United Kingdom, a National Dementia Strategy should be established.
The horrific numbers
As per the official records, more than 700,000 people in the UK suffer from dementia, a figure that has been increasing in recent years. By 2025, one million people are likely to be affected by dementia.
Andrew Scheuber, a spokesman for the Alzheimer's Research Trust noted, "Dementia at the moment costs the UK economy £17 billion a year. If we could work out how to delay Alzheimer's disease by five years, then we can halve the number of people who die with the condition."
Sir Terry Pratchett, Patron, Alzheimer's Research Trust, reposing faith in the effort put in by the trust, opined, “I’m left with an overwhelming sense of optimism. I’m absolutely certain that Alzheimer’s is going to be tamed.”
Dementia is the progressive decline in the cognitive function. This decline is beyond what might be expected from normal aging. In all, there are over 100 types of dementia, with Alzheimer’s being the most common form. Alzheimer’s is incurable and degenerative. It slowly, but surely steals one’s memory, independence and eventually life.
