New drug can help enhance eyelashes

Washington, February 24: Mascara and false eyelashes could soon be a thing of the past as the first eyelash-enhancing drug is about to arrive in the market.

The drug named Latisse, is the only eyelash enhancer which has been given a stamp of approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It had to be tested thoroughly for safety before being approved.

The first-of-its-kind drug has been developed by the company Allergan and will be available only on prescription. It is expected to hit the U.S. market later this month followed by United Kingdom during the spring season.

It is being expected that women will really like the latest product, as they will not have to spend any more money on mascara now.

For the treatment, eye drops need to be applied at the base of eyelash every day. The cost for this turns around to be almost £80 per month.

Latisse was created by Allergan after it was discovered that a medicinal drug has some noticeable side effect.

Allergen will be re-marketing Latisse now. This drug is similar to the one named Lumigan, which is used for treating glaucoma.

Lumigan is in the form of eye-drops and is put in the eyes in order to lower pressure. But in the case of lashes, the same drug needs to be put on the top of the lashes. It is just the same as applying eyeliner.

However, trials have revealed that the eyelash-enhancing effects vanish when women stop using the treatment.
