New York -- New York health officials say they have recorded nearly 700 cases of the drug-resistant illness known as MRSA in the past two months.
The city Health Department received notification of 676 cases of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus since Feb. 27 when hospitals and private laboratories became required to report them, the New York Post reported Sunday. That number is thought to be low because only 21 of 49 labs have reported in so far, the Post said.
"We would assume we would have about 4,000" reports, Melissa Marx of the department's antibioticdefine-resistance unit told doctors at Columbia University Medical Center last week.
Health officials intend to use the reports to determine whether MRSA is on the rise and whether certain groups of people are at greater risk than others, Marx said.
MRSA is a type of staph infection common in hospital patients and is not treatable with antibiotics. A different strain has been infecting people outside of hospitals.

Ever imagined, what it would be like to lead a disease free life and be a part of a world where every body is hale and hearty? Well, it may sound utopian right now but with researches on stem cells on full swing, a few years down the line, it is a definite possibility.
On Oct. 16, 2006, Carron Morrow, from Alabama was successfully cured through a pioneering study in which stem cells were used to regenerate her failing heart. Not long after the surgery, Morrow began to feel like the same old energetic person. "I knew within two months something was going on," Morrow said. "I could sing a whole song at church." She soon got back to her job, and subsequent tests confirmed that her heart was functioning normally once again.
