Twins seem to be the trend of the year, with most celebrities welcoming twin babies home. Erin Maynard is no celebrity, yet her delivery is making news. The reason: Maynard gave birth on Tuesday to what may be the set of second heaviest twins born in America in the past 100 years.
Two weeks prior to the delivery, the mother to be had an ultrasound which showed the babies to be nine pounds each, so neither of the parents were expecting the baby weights to increase so substantially. On delivery, the combined weight of the babies was 23 pounds, 1 ounce. The babies if laid end to end would measure just over 4 feet in length.
An astounding achievement for a mere 5 foot, 10 inches body, Erin states she’s a “little tired, but hanging in there”. Her husband Joey Maynard states “its mind boggling, I just can’t wrap my head around it.” The first baby boy, Sean William emerged at a healthy 10 pounds and 14 ounces, but it was his twin sister, Abigail Rose who dominated her mother’s womb at a whooping weight of 12 pounds and 3 ounces.
The doctors are as surprised as the parents. Jackie Mims, Maynard’s obstetrician states twins are generally born 35 weeks into pregnancy. In this case the babies, conceived without medical assistance were delivered via Cesarean section at 38 weeks.
Mims gave no thought to delivering the babies earlier. Maynard didn’t go into premature labor and had no signs of gestational diabetes or high blood pressure. Since the babies were healthy and growing normally the doctors at Forsyth Medical Center went ahead with the scheduled date decided in advance.
Mims calls Erin Maynard a “terrific patient”. The mother to be strictly abided by the doctor’s advice, undergoing frequent ultrasounds, exams and fetal monitoring, even attending extra appointments a week near the end of her pregnancy.
The obstetrician expected the babies to be large, as Maynard had earlier given birth to a 10 pound, 7 ounces baby boy 2 years ago, but this was a surprise as the patient hadn’t eaten anything extra or taken super vitamins. Mims states, “these are the biggest twins I’ve ever seen, I think “wow” a few times, is what I said”.
The only complication experienced by Maynard was that her abdomendefine stretched a lot, ballooning nearly two feet from her pubic bone to her breastbone during the pregnancy.
Doctors state that Maynard may have some trouble losing the extra weight. She was lucky to avoid complications like lung problems or bleeding in the brains that come alongside the early delivery of twins.
As for the extra weight, the glowing mother states she stopped counting the pounds. She said she, “didn’t want to know at the end, it wasn’t worth it to know how much weight had to come off”
Good things come in pairs. The popular saying holds true in this case. Maynard will return home with her husband and their healthy twin babies. Congratulations to the beautiful mom and god bless the babies, not to mention the uterusdefine.
