Pills found in cake at home of disabled

Cheshire, Connecticut, January 7: Prescription pills were found in a cake served at the home for the disabled at Cheshire, leading to a prompt investigation by the State Police.

According to the Connecticut Department of Development Services, an employee noticed a small pill in the cake when it was being served to inmates. A thorough search revealed more pills at the bottom of the cake.

Emergency medical services were brought in to action immediately. Residents, who had eaten the cake were taken to St. Mary's and Bradley Memorial Hospital and placed under observation. Thankfully, no injury was reported after the medical evaluation. No-one was taken ill either at the home or at the hospital and the residents were doing fine.

After inquiring the employees at the scene, it was found that a Connecticut woman had baked and brought the cake to the home. She told the investigators that she accidentally spilled prescription pills into the batter. She thought she had removed all of them before baking and serving the cake. Apparently, she missed some.

The home for the disabled is supervised and administered by the department of Mental Health and Addiction Services. In a press statement the departments spokeswomen, Joan Barnish declared that investigations would proceed to determine whether criminal charges will be framed against the women. This seems a remote possibility unless the department finds that the incident was deliberate and not accidental. The employee, whose name was not released was placed on administrative leave, until the results of the investigation came in.
