Reddy's begins cardiovascular drug trial

New Delhi, Feb 7 (IANS) Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical firm Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Monday said it has initiated clinical trials for its cardiovascular drug in Ireland.

"The phase-one clinical trails are being conducted in Belfast and will explore the safety and pharmacokinetic profiles of drug candidate RUS 3108 in humans. This is the first time the company is testing a drug in Europe," the company said in a statement to the Bombay Stock Exchange Monday.

RUS 3108 is being developed for the treatment of atherosclerosis, a major cause of cardiovascular disorders such as heart attacks and strokes. There are currently no drugs in the market that can directly treat atherosclerosis.

"RUS 3018 represents a unique treatment approach to the cardiovascular disease," said Uday Saxena, CEO of Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, in the statement

The drug candidate works through multiple pathways involved in the disease such as inflammation, proliferation and thrombosis by inducing a protein called perlecan.

Company scientists have determined that regulating the expression of perlecan can provide direct protection against atherosclerosis.
