Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia. People in the early stages of this disease experience momentary failure of memory and are at a loss of words. As the disease progresses they become muddled and forget the names of people, places and events most of the time. This leads to them experiencing frequent mood swings making them withdrawn and underconfident.
However in accordance with a latest trial, carried out on 12 patients with Alzheimers, brisk progress in vocal facilitation has been observed by injecting a medicine into their spine.
The drug used is called Etanercept (Enbrel) and is an antiTNF prescription used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. According to researchers, this wonder has been achieved in a matter of minutes after injecting this drug.
Dr Edward Tobinick, who is a part of a private medical group in LA and Hyman Gross of the University of Southern California have been audacious enough to make these tall claims and their research results have been published in BMC Neurology.
The explanation to their theory is quite logical. According to them the brain uses TNF to regulate the transmission of nerve impulses. In a patient of Alzheimer’s, the high levels of TNF hinder this progression. Enbrel being antiTNF, supresses its activity and results in a drop in the signs of Alzheimer’s.
Dr Tobinick has made the video of this trial showing the improvement in language skills and the same is available on internet. Though Dr Tobinick has accepted that the data presented has some constraints as the clinical trial was not a well guarded one. Nevertheless, the inferences drawn are forceful enough to make further investigations in this direction and search for an antiTNF cure for patients of Alzheimer’s.
Dr Tobinick’s research has met with a lot of criticism from other experts of this disease and they have not accepted his deductions with open minds. In fact they have been quite cynical about them.
According to them, inspite of the fact that Enbrel is injected into the spine, the quantity that reaches the brain is not adequate to have any outcome.
However, satistfied with his convictions, Dr Tobinick has appealed for a detailed trial and assessment of his study.
