If you thought that skin and hair trepidations concern the fairer sex alone, it’s time you start paying some more attention to your looks. We live in an era where every man is struggling to be the next Adonis and nothing short of it is acceptable.
Gone are the days when shaving was thought to be both the beginning and the end of a man’s skin care regime. Today’s Mr. Macho prides himself for paying just as much attention to his manicure, pedicure, facial and haircut as his female counterparts.
As per Gillette’s Pesce, "The men's skin-care market is absolutely bursting. It's all incremental growth because you're getting people who don't use a product to use one. In other personal care categories, gaining market share means stealing it from someone else." Such a rise in the sale of men’s beauty products can be attributed to the growing awareness amongst men regarding the need to look and feel good.
Why Men Require a Different Skin Care Regime
L'Oreal claims, “The differences between sexes must be considered when choosing skin-care products.” Men's skin is thicker, and they secrete twice as much oil as women and large amounts of testosterone. Their skin also has larger pores and is thicker and rougher with profuse hair growth. So an appropriate skin care routine becomes all the more important. A typical skin care routine for a man would comprise of cleansing, shaving, toning with aftershave and moisturizing. All in the order mentioned. For the oily skin types, moisturizing can be given a miss.
Cleansing
Deep cleansing helps wash out the dirt, grime, and oil accumulated in the skin’s pores. It also assists in getting rid of the harmful germs, which over time might become a cradle for disgusting pimples. As far as possible, use a natural cleanser and the soap that you use on the rest of you body should be totally avoided. Use a face wash instead.
Cleansing could be followed up with a scrub, not every day but once a week should be fine for your face. This would help you get rid of the unwanted dead skin. Use a mild scrub that will cleanse your skin without damaging it. The man peeping back from the mirror will be a different you altogether, for you are bound to feel a lot more fresher, cleaner and confident.
Shaving
The most complex part of the skin care routine for a man is shaving, but the process is so in your system that you have stopped taking notice of the same long back. Getting a good shave would depend upon how sensitive your skin is, i.e. how it reacts to razors and other shaving products. The following tips will ensure that you not only get the shaving you crave, but also leave your facial skin looking and feeling its best.
- Unless a must, avert shaving in the morning. This would allow the puffiness in your skin to ebb a little and give you a closer shave later.
- Before you begin the task, wet your shave with a little warm water. Wet hair is weaker and can hence be easily cut by the razor.
- Take a generous amount of shaving cream and massage it thoroughly on your face for a minute or two. Remember that the best shaving cream doesn’t have a lot of foam. Using an Aloe Vera based shaving cream is ideal not just for getting a close shave but also protecting your skin against razor irritations and burns.
- Use only a sharp and a good quality of razor to prevent the undesirable cuts and irritation that follow. Change your blade the moment it starts causing even a slight abrasion. Never ever, use a disposable razor more than once.
Toning
Toning helps in restoring the ph balance of the skin that might be disturbed due to the various chemicals used during cleansing and shaving. An after shave lotion is a fine astringent, if you wish to give your skin something special, opt for a glycolic or alpha hydroxyl acids based astringent. Natural toners like alum are more beneficial in preserving skin elasticity.
Moisturizing
A routine application of moisturizer after a bath, ensures that the natural moistures are well trapped and you feel all the more at home in your own skin. Do not forget to use an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) separately, if your moisturizer doesn’t have it. A minimum of SPF 15 is good enough to provide the protection that your skin requires against the harmful effects of the sun’s ultra violet rays. For those of you, who have a field job, go for an SPF 30.
Get a facial done at least once a month if you have crossed the age of 25. This would help delay the onset of wrinkles.
And remember, you don’t have to be the ‘Tim from Mills & Boons’ to sweep the girls off their feet. Let your confidence and self-belief do all the talking. Good luck and ladies will follow as an after effect.

While many skin care products will work for both men and women, some men prefer to use those manufactured just for them. This is, in part, because many skin care products used by women can contain softer fragrances. Also, because a man's skin is made up somewhat differently from that of a woman, certain it may be preferable to use products better suited to its texture. Another aggravating factor can occur when a man shaves. If you shave everyday, you may want to use something that is more gentle to your face, especially if you cut yourself often or your skin tends to be sensitive.
