Dresden -- Accidents involving bicycles or scooters often lead to infection of the pancreas in children, according to a study published in the German medical journal Aerzte Zeitung.
The study was carried out by the University of Dresden and found that two-thirds of all cases of an abdomen trauma result in infection of the pancreas in children.
A typical accident involving a bicycle or scooter resulted in the handle bar impacting on the stomach. Even small injuries to the abdomen could result in an infection of the pancreas, according to the study.
If a child complains of stomach pain, then they should be taken immediately to a doctor for examination.
Most infections are of a mild nature, but the child should be treated on an in-patient basis as a precaution, according to advice by Dresden paediatrician Jobst Henker.
Other causes of the illness are infection or injuries to the bile duct.
