That Shaking Leg Could Be A Problem! - RLS Know More About It
Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) or Wittmaack- Ekbom’s syndrome is an overlooked neurological disorder which considerably affects both movement and sleep.
RLS is a condition in which there are feelings of burning, itching and discomfort in the legs while the person is sitting or lying down. The uncomfortable feelings make the person want to get up and move around. And when he does so, it gives him temporary relief.
Women are more likely to get affected with RLS. Restless Leg Syndrome commonly affects the legs. But in rare cases it can affect the arms and torso also.
Though the exact cause of RLS is not clear but the most common causes are anaemia, diabetes and kidney failure. In some cases it is genetically inherited. Over consumption of caffeine can also lead to the same.
There are two types of RLS- primary RLS and secondary RLS. Primary RLS occurs naturally and mostly after the age of 50. On the other hand secondary RLS occurs because of complications in pregnancy, iron deficiency or kidney failure.
In most of the cases Restless Leg Syndrome is mild and does not require treatment as such. But if the symptoms start interfering with a person’s normal lifestyle, then medication is required.
There are a number of changes which can be made in one’s daily routine. These changes can help ease out symptoms of RLS.
1.Exercise regularly.
2.Do not smoke.
3.Avoid caffeine, tobacco and alcohol.
4.Sleep well and on time.
A massage or a hot bath can also help relax the symptoms of RLS.
If iron deficiency is the cause then taking iron tablets may help to reduce the symptoms. If pregnancy is the cause of RLS, the symptoms will usually disappear within four weeks after birth.
If all the above mentioned tips don’t work out then one must consult a good doctor.
The most common form of medicine that is used to treat RLS is dopamine agonist. But this might lead to side-effects such as nausea, vomiting and indigestion.
If dopamine agonists do not work then other strong pain killers and benzodiazepines can be used for treatment. But these medicines are also not suitable for everyone. So one needs to have a thorough discussion with a doctor before consuming them for treatment.
As is always said that prevention is better than cure, so ensuring a good sleep can help prevent RLS. Avoiding naps during the day and early evening can go a long way in helping one avoid Restless Leg Syndrome.
