Tips on how to get maximum nutrition from food

One of the major keys to good health is good nutrition. This means making sure you regularly eat foods that have a lot of vitamins and minerals in them, as well as foods that are not high in fat. Cooking plays an important part so here are few tips to save nutrition in our food:

^ Keep vegetables away from heat and light as some of the vitamins are destroyed by heat and bright sunlight. Further destruction comes with cooking so by the time you eat your food, a good amount nutrients are lost.

^ Boil potatoes as whole.

^ Fruits and vegetables such as pears, apples and carrots should not be peeled and if you have to peel them then peel lightly. They should be washed before peeling and not afterwards.

^ Clear soups are best bet as all the vitamins, minerals, proteins etc. are passed into the soup thus making it nutritious. On the other hand thick soups are not good, as flour and fat are used to thicken them.

^ It is best to use stainless steel utensils for cooking food as like other metals it does not react to the food. If you do not have them then the next best thing would be to transfer them to stainless steel utensil or plain glass bowl as soon as it is cooked.

^ If you are meat eater then have it baked, grilled and broiled rather than fried. Take the skin off before eating chicken.

^ Eat fish at least once a week.

^ Don’t overcook vegetables. Keep them crunchy.

^ Avoid storing foods in fridge for more than a day.

^ Try and cook food just before eating so as to avoid reheating.

^ Steaming in pressure cooker protects vitamins.
