UK Hospitals Falter in Heart Attack Care
It’s very clear that the people suffering from cardiacdefine problems are unhappy with the quality of care delivered. The health services need to give the same importance to cardiac rehabilitation as they give to treatment of people with acute attacks.
The doctors and hospitals need to get their act together. They want to do the right thing but, given the pressures and constraints they are operating under, it is a trifle difficult.
An audit found London had the lowest rate of cardiacdefine rehabilitation, amounting only to 31%. This drastic state of affairs is putting the patients at high risk. Post surgery care saves lives, but few get this service.
Heart disease is one of Britain’s biggest killers, with one adult dying of this condition every three minutes. Provision of care for heart attack patients is inadequate, though the rate of the disease here is perhaps the highest in the world, with the exception of Finland and Ireland in the developed countries.
Unless the government and health professionals prioritize funding for life saving treatments, they will continue to fail heart patients, said National Health Services (NHS) Confederation spokesman.
The British Cardiac Society and Royal College of Physicians are making a joint effort to fund a cardiovascular care center to target major areas like re-stabilizing blood flow to the heart and treatment of blood clots.
There is a concentrated effort by health professionals to provide integrated care, but there is still ample room for improvement. The recommendations need to be implemented more consistently, with equal emphasis to coronary heart disease and other heart ailments.
Cardiac rehabilitation is another aspect to be taken into account. This is a medically supervised program to help heart patients recover quickly and improve their overall physical, mental and social functioning. The goal is to stabilize, slow or even reverse the progress of the disease. It is to improve the functional capacity and quality of life, creating a sense of well being and optimism about the future.
The president of British Cardiac Society feels that there has been a good deal of improvement, but UK still lagged behind Europe and US. This was basically because United Kingdom has just about 630 cardiologists as compared to 24,000 in USA. Without basic manpower the service simply cannot be provided to the level it ought to.
