UK Offers Online Service For Contraceptive Pills

UK Offers Online Service For Contraceptive Pills

As a part of a recently launched campaign, women in UK will be able to get contraceptive pills online without actually seeing a doctor.

Contraceptive pills were available only on a doctor’s prescription till now. The service reaches out not only to those women who have already been on these pills, but service will be expanded for very soon for those also women who never had the pills.

A popular medico website called DrThom is offering this service where women have to answer an online questionnaire followed by questions from a doctor online again, to get the pills.

The patients are expected to be honest about their age and medical history while purchasing online though this is not a fool proof-method. But it definitely makes it convenient for a women to make her choices.

Doctor Thomas Van Every, medical director of DrThom's said “The aim of our new contraceptive service is to make it easier and more convenient for women throughout the UK to get access to the Pill".

"Our specialist service is ideal for a woman living a long way from her doctor or a woman who is too busy because of work or childcare to take the time to visit her GP. We see the DrThom service as part of an ongoing trend, a trend consistent with UK government policy; to help women access contraceptive services as close to their home as possible" he added.

The website offers three months' supply for £29.99 which is roughly €38.95 and prescribes to women over the age of 18, though the age of consent in England is 16 and 17 in Northern Ireland.

The patient should hold a credit or debit card in her name to avail the service. As a part of registration patients will also have to provide their date of birth.

DrThom’s spokesperson said “online doctors would have to rely on what the patient told them about their health -- the same as with a regular GP. There's nothing to stop a patient lying when they use the service, but they were only doing a disservice to their own health by lying." he added.
