Hernia is an opening or weakness in the muscular structure of the abdominal wall that causes a bulge. This bulge is noticeable when the abdominal muscles are tightened, thereby increasing the pressure in the abdomendefine.
A combination of muscle weakness and straining such as with heavy lifting, weight gain, persistent coughing, or difficulty with bowel movements or urination, can further aggravate the problem. The most common location for hernia is the groin area.
Symptoms:
• A noticeable protrusion in the groin area or in the abdomendefine.
• Pain while lifting something.
• A dull aching sensation
• A vague feeling of fullness
Types:
Apart from the common types like Femoral, Umbilical and Incisional hernia, there are many others kinds including the Lumbar, Internal, and Spigelian hernias. They all occur at different sites over the abdomen in areas that are prone to anatomical or structural weakness.
Treatment:
Hernias usually need to be surgically repaired to prevent intestinal damage and further complications. The surgery can be performed by an open repair (small incision over the herniated area) or by Laparoscopic surgery (minimally invasive). The surgeon determines the best method of repair depending upon individual condition.
Should all hernias be treated?
In general, hernias that cause sever pains, limit activity or are at risk of further complications, should be surgically repaired. Sometimes, a hernia can be temporarily controlled by wearing a belt-like device, called a truss that applies external compression, pushing the tissues back into the abdomen holding them in place.
Preventing hernia:
Though most factors leading to the development of hernia are beyond individual control, they are either inherited or develop as the individual grows. However, the risk can be truncated by adopting a good body mechanics when lifting, a good abdominal support posture and a complete weight gain mechanism.
