A new research done by Dr. Michael Trenell and professor Roy Taylor at Newcastle University shows that people with late-onset or type 2-diabetes can control their glucose levels and burn fat by walking at lunchtime, or before or after work.
The researchers found that people who exercised burnt about 20 percent more fat than those who did not. A reduction in the effects of diabetes was also seen after a time period of few weeks.
The study took into account 10 people with type 2-diabetes and 10 people in a control group. After the study was completed, a comparison was done between the two groups. It was found that people who walked for an extra 45 minutes a day became better at burning fat.
Dr. Trenell said, “People often find the thought of going to the gym quite daunting, but what we’ve found is that nearly everyone with diabetes is able to become more active through walking.”
Exercise helps to make mitochondria (tiny powerhouse inside the cells) more efficient. Regular exercise helps them to burn more fat and sugar. High levels of fat in the blood and muscles stops the muscles from storing sugar effectively.
Dr. Trenell added that the study is really exciting because walking is an easy and immediate way to control diabetes without any additional drugs. He said the message is simple and really effective.
