Doctors at the Heart & Vasculardefine Center in Houston declare that losing weight virtually guarantees to have a salutary effect on the cardiovascular system.
Dr Christie Ballantyne, director of the Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention at the Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center and Baylor College of Medicine, stated that, "Obesity appears to be the central component of the metabolic syndrome.
"Our study have shown that weight loss of as little as 6.5 percent in individuals with the disease results in substantial reductions in blood pressure, glucose, triglycerides and total cholesterol, all factors that lead to heart disease.
"These impressive results occur early in the weight loss, well before individuals even begin to approach their ideal body weight.”
Obesity has severe health consequences. The complications resulting from obesity can negatively effect, the quality and length of a person's life. It can lead to numerous illnesses, including heart attacks, strokes and diabetes.
Weight puts a strain on the heart and the likelihood of developing heart disease increases even if a person does not have other risk factors. Excess weight accumulates collagen fibers, which causes tissue -- including heart muscle and arteries -- to become stiff. With time, the heart starts to take a bit longer to relax between contractions and fill back up with blood. Hence it affects the heart's elasticity.
Obesity, a burgeoning problem in many developed nations, is a major risk factor for heart disease. Abdominal fat, in particular, is linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Today cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death globally. An estimated 50 million Americans have the potentially serious metabolic syndrome, a major health concern.
Therefore, risk factor of the metabolic syndrome is closely linked to an increased risk for heart disease. Research shows that even moderate weight loss can cut the risk of heart disease. Besides a gradual and consistent weight loss shows significant improvements in blood pressure, triglycerides, reduces glucose and cholesterol levels.
The study demonstrates that weight loss represents a safe method for regulating the cardiovascular risk factors associated with the metabolic syndrome. The researchers declared that it should be the first option when treating the disease.
