Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, occurs when a muscle at the end of esophagus does not close properly and allows stomach contents to reflux back up into the esophagus and irritate it.
The refluxed stomach acid when touches the lining of the esophagus, it causes a burning sensation in the chest or throat which is known as heartburn.
If you suffer from heartburn once in a while then it's normal but if you are having heartburn more than twice a week may be considered as GERD. Your heartburn may be a sign of deeper trouble i.e health complications.
Visit your doctor if you have symptoms such as bad breath, chest pain, problem in swallowing, hoarseness of voice, feels as if stomach contents have moved into the throat, chronic sore throat, vague abdominal paindefine or burning abdominal pain, bloating and belching, persistent dry cough and not able to sleep properly.
Few tips to help avoid heartburn:
Change in lifestyle and eating habits can help in preventing heartburn.
* Avoid food with a high acid content, like tomatoes.
* Cut down on nicotine (any tobacco product) and alcohol.
* Being obese increases the chances of heartburn.
* Stop eating fried or fatty foods.
* Avoid eating for at least 2-3 hours before hitting bed.
* Use pillows to elevate your head during sleep.
* Avoid drinks with caffeine (coffee, tea, colas, chocolate).
* Garlics and onions should be avoided. Too much of garlic might give you heartburn.
* Avoiding tight or restrictive clothing is also recommended.
* Don't eat large meals but eat smaller amounts more frequently.
* Don't eat or drink except water and medications for at least 2 to 3 hours before retiring to bed.
If the symptoms persists then consider:
Over the counter medication: OTC antacids or over-the-counter acid suppression medications can work for frequent heartburn as well as rare heartburn symptoms. Some antacids like Maalox, Rolaids, and Tums contains calcium carbonate, which neutralizes stomach acid.
Surgery: Though more than 95% of the people usually get benefited by changing their lifestyle and eating habits but few have to undergo surgery.
