Men have been trying to live up to their age old image of being rough and tough but with time they have at least learnt to take care of their looks and this could be seen as unisex parlor is grooming in every niche and corner.
Looking after their physical appearance could be easier than looking after their health which still is a taboo among many men who visit doctor when they have no other option left or their wives have to drag them to the doctor’s cabin…men should thank their wives for this move.
A study was published in the American Journal of Public Health, showed a number of reasons why men don't go to doctor. The survey conducted on nearly 400 men men under Men Health's Forum.
1. Feminine surrounding
The men considers the décor and ambiance of the hospital or clinics to be more feminine and are thus quite uncomfortable while visiting health services which they feel is more gender biased. Subjects in the Men's Health Forum said that they wanted to see more of men magazines, men’s health posters, men movies etc to make it more informal and fun place. Some even suggested that online booking should be done for surgery and one of the suggestion was that surgery should be held at pubs, golf clubs, local betting shops etc.
2. Long waiting time
Men would be ready for the surgery if it is open on Sundays or in the evenings. They cant sit and wait for the long hours and their acceptance to go and see the doctor will depend up on how much will be the waiting time.
3. Not big enough problem
They consider that there problem is not big enough that they have to see a doctor for that.
4. Embarrassing Problem
Men are not good in talking about their personal problem whether it’s about their health or about their life. Mental problems such as stress, depressiondefine or physical problems such as sexual difficulties are some of the things which men find embarrassing to talk about even to their close friends and thus they avoid talking about it keeping them private.
Men will not like discussing things that might make them emotional or bring up their emotions.
5. Work more important
Men will consider their work more important than their health and thus will not take proper rest or even visit a doctor for treatment even when they are not in good health. They have more commitment to their work than their own well being.
6. Visit doctor only when the problem is acute
Most of the men will consider going to doctor only when they will have visible problems and consider going to doctor only for emergency, surgery or treating sick people so they will hold back until they can see some visible physical problem confronting them.
7. Illness is sign of weakness
Men have self image of masculinity and this holds them back in visiting a doctor as it means a person is ill and illness means weakness.
8. Worried about cost and other practical issues
Men have their own notions regarding doctor visit considering it costly, wastage of time, practical issue like transportation etc. They will have their own excuses for not visiting a doctor.
9. Women are more likely to discuss about their health than the men population. It has been widely known by know that women surpasses men in life expectancy ratio.
10. Being controlled by the other person even if it is doctor is not liked by men. They don’t like the idea of others telling them what to do and what not to.
