Wife stays contented as husband uses her kidney

Kuala Lumpur, February 1: Flowers, chocolates, jewels might be the most popular gifts for those in love, but for How Kok Leong all the love from his wife came laden a kidney.

The 39-year-old man from Malaysia was down with a kidney failure and had been undergoing the dreaded dialysis treatment for quite sometime. His wife Ngui Fui Lang decided to help her ailing husband by donating her own kidney to keep him going.

“I did not expect her to give me one of her kidneys. Her donation is even better than striking a lottery!” said How, who has given up driving lorries to do odd jobs now.

Ngui’s gesture definitely outshines all those people who take pride in flaunting tattoos of their lover’s name etched on the body. A few drops of blood and voluntarily bearing pain seems a lot easier than giving someone a crucial organ of your own system.

The operation was carried out at University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), in February last year, on the sixth day of Chinese New Year.

Her father discouraged Nui, but she remained adamant and almost a year later, she says she has never regretted giving her kidney to her husband.

“I do not sense any difference after the transplant,” said Ngui, 30.

The only motivation for her in taking such a bold step was her love for How. “I was not scared,” she said. “He went through dialysis three times a week and he was so weak then. I did not want to see my husband suffer.”

Ngui, from Pontianak, Indonesia moved to Malaysia and married How in February 2005, following a one-month courtship. The two had met through a matchmaker.

Besides her kidney, Ngui also had another very special gift for her husband – their son Jun Shen, who was born in October 2006, only three months before his diabetic father was diagnosed with a kidney failure.
