Large-chinned women may be less desirable to men despite being sexually more active than women with softer features. Not only do men find them unattractive but also they realize that these women cannot be blindly trusted.
Excessive growth of chins in women is caused by testosterone, a male growth hormone, which is present in all women in various amounts. Besides the physical distinctiveness, rise in testosterone levels also increases a woman’s sexual assertiveness, a trait more common in males.
Researchers from four universities across the United States and Canada questioned a group of young women regarding their sexual histories and fantasies. Later, a group of men was asked to rate these women on their desirability as a future partner.
Men, it was found, were not too keen on considering women with masculine features for long-term relationships, though they did not mind a casual fling.
“The findings are important in demonstrating that perceptions of women as desirable and trustworthy long-term mates can be reliably gleaned by men from viewing only the women's facial features,” explain the study's authors in Personality And Individual Differences journal.
“Results suggest that information about women's sexual unrestrictedness, which is related to their risk of infidelity, can potentially be conveyed by the masculinity of women's faces,” they wrote.
Study author Dr Lorne Campbell said that physical features, which can be partly attributed to testosterone, cannot be easily covered and they do give some signs about a person’s sexual preferences and attitude.
According to Dr. Campbell the research was the first to suggest that masculine facial features of a woman can indicate about “their sexual unrestrictedness and perhaps their long-term mate quality.”
