Cough with Phlegm

I had a cough 5 days ago. Lately, I feel like it became a hard cough because I have phlegm and I can't cought it out. Are there remedies to soften the phlegm so that I can cough it out? i don't want to go to the doctor because this is just a cough. Thanks.
