minerva is right, you should look at the diet chart of your child...make him eat more of veggies, fresh fruits, whole grain and lots of water. Avoid junk food and energy drinks.
There are various factors due to which the child tend to put on weight, could be genetic or environmental. You should get yourself enrolled into the task of making your child comfortable and supportive, talk about overweight thing and encourage him/her to shed some weight rather then rebuking about the excess weight.
You must look at the diet plan and cut down the fat in diet, be more selective regarding food, choosing healthy and good food. Encourage more physical activity be like playing games together, going for walk after dinner etc. Make your child eat slowly and no snacks while watching TV.
