Indian-origin doctor charged with healthcare fraud; FBI on manhunt

In what can be termed as a shameful incident tarnishing the reputation of Indian medical fraternity in the world, Gautam Gupta, 57, an Illinois-based weight loss doctor has been accused of allegedly defrauding state and private insurance companies.

Gupta, a well-known in Chicago area for radio ads promising weight loss, has been charged with felony counts of mail fraud, conspiracy, and swindling U.S. Insurance companies – Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Illinois and Illinois Medicaid – of nearly $25mn over the past decade.

Vaccine prices revealed by UNICEF

World’s largest vaccine buyer UNICEF, for the first time, has revealed its vaccine price list with the intent to bring down the cost of the vaccines by starting a competition among drug manufacturers.

On its website, UNICEF has disclosed the amount it paid to various drug-makers to purchase 16 vaccines in a 10-year period. The recent step set to bring greater transparency has not been endorsed by western pharmaceutical companies, who in some cases charge more than Indian companies.

New pictorial warnings mandatory on tobacco products

The Union Health Ministry of India has issued a notification on Friday, making the printing of new pictorial warning mandatory on smoking and chewable forms of tobacco products.

The notification will come into effect from Dec. 1 this year.

The notification makes it mandatory to print pictorial warnings on the cigarette, bidi, and cigar packaging. The smokeless and chewable tobacco products including Gutka also come under the purview of the notification.
