Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) among children is worrying, say the experts. It develops so stealthily over time that it may go unnoticed, and unreported, until kidneys have been permanently damaged.
Most epidemiological information on CKD is derived from data available on end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Little information is available on the early stages of CKD, especially related to children.
In the absence of national registry, the incidence of CKD among children is not known.
The Indian Society of Pediatric Nephrology and Indian Society of Nephrology have teamed up to maintain a registry that collects and records information about CKD among children. By collecting and collating the data, they hope they can intervene in battling CKD among children.
