A:

It is possible in very rare cases, women having genital herpes can transmit the virus to the infant if the mother has HSV in the birth canal during delivery. But that doesn’t mean that Women who obtain HSV cannot have children. 20 to 25% of pregnant women have genital herpes. Having awareness about the risks of genital herpes infections during pregnancy helps mother and her partner to make informed decisions to protect themselves and their child.
There are few treatments to treat all primary outbreaks of genital herpes with antiviral medications, including primary outbreaks in pregnant women. The antiviral medications available are acyclovir and famciclovir. Acyclovir has the most data on the safety of use in pregnancy.
