Genetic link discovered for bone disease

An international team led by University of Edinburgh has discovered three genes which may lead to the progress of Paget’s disease, a chronic disorder that results in enlarged and deformed bone.

The team of scientists from UK, Spain, Australia, and New Zealand, claim that genes control the rate at which bones are repaired, and may provide the reasons for the development of the disease.

Paget's disease, commonly observed at an older age and in women, interrupts the body's normal method of breaking and replacing old bone, leading to bone pain, brittle bones, and advanced arthritis.

The compounds called cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) are said to inflict inflammatory response in the body and elevate the risk of heart disease, stroke, type-2 diabetes, arthritis and a host of other age-related diseases.

"We know that inflammation plays a major role in many diseases. Yoga appears to be a simple and enjoyable way to add an intervention that might reduce risks for developing heart disease, diabetes and other age-related diseases.
