Most H1N1 victims in high risk category

According to health experts, though, swine flu has not proven to be more dangerous than seasonal influenza for the young and healthy people it still poses a potential risk for pregnant women and people with pre-existing health conditions.

An analysis of H1N1 fatalities in Pune since April reveals that 42 percent of the persons who succumbed to the lethal disease were those suffering from either serious lifestyle diseases.

Arun Jamkar, dean of Sassoon General Hospital stated, "Of the 33 people who died due to the H1N1 influenza at Sassoon Hospital since April this year, eight had other associated illness like diabetes, hypertension and six were pregnant women.”

Though the H1N1 pandemic that swept through the nation killing and sickening thousands appears on its last leg, the risk has not yet abated, with the virus still circulating, albeit with lesser intensity.

With four more people falling prey to the lethal flu Wednesday, the mortality figure in the country has shot up to 1401.

According to reports from Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare one casualty occurred in Maharashtra today itself. The remaining three, including two on Madhya Pradesh and one in Maharashtra, had happened earlier but were confirmed as H1N1 related deaths today.

State-wise death count
As of now, Maharashtra, the epicenter of the swine flu outbreak in India, remains the state with the highest number of fatalities, accounting for 382 lives lost.

Though the highly contagious respiratory disease H1N1 appears on its last leg in the country with declining transmissions, the danger is not well and truly over with the virus still circulating albeit with lesser intensity.

Reports of 11 new deaths Wednesday is a troubling reminder that the influenza continues to infect, sicken, and even kill at-risk people.

Since the lethal disease claimed its first victim on Aug. 3, the mortality figure in the nation has mounted to 1357.

One person succumbed to the virus in Rajasthan today, while the remaining ten deaths, five each were reported from the states of Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

All the ten casualties had occurred previously but were confirmed as H1N1 related by the respective states to the union health ministry today.
