Prozac can prevent paralysis in stroke patients--study

Giving selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants like Prozac soon after a stroke can help patients recover from paralysis and move again, scientists said on Monday.

SSRIs like Celexa, Lexapro, Paxil, Prozac, and Zoloft have been known to enhance motor skill recovery after stroke.

Prozac can relieve mood symptoms and help neurons to re-establish connections in the brain of stroke patients, speeding their recovery, the study suggests.

The authors, led by Professor François Chollet, said, "The positive effect of the drug on motor function of recovering patients suggests that the... action of SSRIs provides a new pathway that should be explored further in the treatment of acute ischaemic stroke."

Rotavirus vaccine can combat diarrhea, save millions of lives, say studies

Seattle, U.S., January 28 -- In a breakthrough invention, scientists claim to have found the cure to the deadly rotavirus that kills millions of children with diarrhoea worldwide.

The study conducted at PATH, a non-profit organisation, revealed that immunizing infants against rotavirus could save two million children who die of diarrhea each year.

Dr. Kathleen Neuzil, lead author of the study and senior advisor for immunization at PATH, said, “A disease that may be a nuisance in the U.S. can be a killer in a poorer country.”

Neuzil also added that, “Death from diarrheal disease in general is the second-leading cause of death among kids in developing nations.”
