Vitamin D intake may reduce risk of age-related macular disease--study

Recent study has indicated an increased intake of vitamin D may minimize the risk of an early onset of age-related macular degeneration in women aged between 50 to 74.

Age-related macular degeneration or AMD is an incurable disease affecting older women that results in a loss of vision in the center of visual field, the macula, due to retinal damage. The disease makes it difficult to read and recognize faces.

Researchers observed women below 75 years of age who had higher levels of vitamin D, found in oily fish and eggs, were 59 percent less likely to develop age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
