Cancer patients who die in the comfort of their home are more at peace, feel more secure and connected with family and friends in their last days than those who breathe their last in the confines of the intensive care unit or hospital, claims a new study.
According to researchers, home health care not only saves money but is a less traumatic experience for both the cancer patient and their caregivers.
Lead author of the study, Dr. Alexi Wright, an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, stated, "Patients with cancer who died in an intensive care unit or hospital experienced more physical and emotional distress and worse quality of life at the end of life.
