Red meat can increase bowel cancer risk, warn British researchers

Red-meat lovers might be more vulnerable to developing colorectal cancer or other cancers of stomach and throat than those who limit their intake of steaks and hamburgers, British scientists are expected to recommend in their report.

The Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN), an advisory committee of independant scientists in the UK, was asked by the Department of Health to review dietary advice on meat consumption as a source of iron, the Daily Mail reports.

Previously, a draft report published in June 2009 had raised concerns over the consumption of red meat and advised Britons that lowering the daily consumption of meat might reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.

“If you are frying a steak and are mindful of your health, then marinate it in either beer or red wine,” researchers advised.
