Exercise may prevent strokes in older people--study

Seniors who engage in moderate to intense exercise daily could be cutting their risk of ‘silent strokes,’ that are the first sign of cerebrovascular disease, by 40 percent, new study findings report.

“These ‘silent strokes’ are more significant than the name implies, because they have been associated with an increased risk of falls and impaired mobility, memory problems and even dementia, as well as stroke,” study author Joshua Z. Willey from the Columbia University in New York, said.

Swimming for long hours may cause bladder cancer

Swimming could be a great low-impact aerobic activity to keep you fit and healthy but a new study by Spanish researchers has warned that people who regularly swim in chlorinated water or take lots of showers or baths could increase the risk of developing bladder cancer.

According to the study, regular swimmers are at increased risk of absorbing cancer-causing chemicals called trihalomethanes (THMs) through the skin.

Taking a shower, having a long bath or going for a swim are the three activities more likely undertaken by the wealthy people to keep clean or enjoy leisure time, and they also opt for bottled water rather than tap water to avoid any diseases.

Swimming enhances babies’ gripping power and balance--study

A novel research by scientists at Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) suggests that young swimmers have better balance and grasping power as compared to the non-swimmers.

The difference is significant even if children as young as five-year olds are taught to swim and perform water related activities.

“Practice makes perfect,” says Hermundur Sigmundsson, a professor of psychology at NTNU. Now Sigmundsson and Brian Hopkins, a professor of psychology from Lancaster University, have shown that baby swimming is good for developing balance and movement in infants and young children.
