Routine antibiotic use is helpful for treating young children suffering from acute ear infections, according to two new independent trials.
Taking the medicines is found to be only modestly effective, lowering the length of symptoms only slightly, in kids under the age of 2.
However, it is beneficial in preventing the relapse and progression of the disease.
Otitis media, an acute ear infection, is the most commonly occurring ear disease in children for which antibiotics are prescribed.
"The study underscores the need to restrict antibiotic treatment to those with certain infection," said Dr. Alejandro Hoberman, a pediatrician at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and lead author of one of the studies.
