Eat fruits and veggies rich in carotene to live longer

Fruits rich in alpha-carotene such as oranges and vegetables like carrots, winter squash, oranges and tangerines can lead to a longer life, according to a novel study by a team of researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Consumption of alpha-carotene (antioxidant) rich foods can prevent diseases like heart disease and cancer, lowering the risk of early death.

However, further research is required to reveal the elements contributing to the health benefits of the antioxidant.

"Alpha-carotene may be at least partially responsible for the risk reduction; however, we are unable to rule out the possible links of other antioxidants or other elements in vegetables and fruits to lower mortality risk.", said Dr. Chaoyang Li of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in Atlanta.
